Position Summary

The Art Lab Assistant provides assistance to faculty and students in the Art Department. The Art Lab Assistant’s main function is to perform studio set up and maintenance and general administrative assistance to an academic studio.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of theAcademic Coordinator or Department Chair, the Art Lab Assistant is accountable for assistance to faculty by setting up, maintaining and operating one or more assigned academic studios in the Art Departmentthrougheffective performance in these essential duties: Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining an inventory of art supplies
  • Cleaning and maintaining organization in the lab
  • Ordering supplies as necessary
  • Maintaining records of hazardous waste and MSDS sheets
  • Organizing hazardous waste at the beginning of the semester
  • Maintaining the classrooms and studios in safe and working order
  • Monitoring solvents and other materials
  • Preparing clay and glazes for student use
  • Mixing and recycling of clay and glazes
  • Loading, Firing, Unloading kiln
  • Organizing still life materials
  • Ensuring safe and proper use of tools and equipment
  • Setup and testing of studio equipment and materials
  • Preparing equipment for studio use
  • Supporting academic functions of the art department
  • Assisting instructors and students during class and open studio time
  • Directing student workers’ duties
  • Performing other job related duties as assigned
  • Assisting Gallery Coordinator with all aspects of managing gallery space and program

Minimum Qualifications

Associate’s degree in Art or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of experience and training which would lead to the competencies required to carry out the position’s essential duties.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Understanding of principles and concepts of the Art Program
  • Advanced understanding in assigned studio equipment operation, and set up and safety procedures
  • Basic skills in Art equipment maintenance
  • Knowledge of different artistic media (including sculpture, ceramics, painting, drawing, and photography)
  • Knowledge of art studio environment, materials and techniques
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with guiding students
Work Environment
  • Incumbents typically perform their work in studios or classrooms as well as rooms for storage and cleaning of equipment. Incumbents may be required to clean equipment and apparatus, to transport and set up equipment, involving moderate physical effort. Incumbents may come in contact with materials containing solvents and other toxic substances.Some moderate lifting required (35-50 lbs.)

  • $37.74 hourly
