Job summary

The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal is seeking an Arson Investigator I – Special Agent. The selected candidate will conduct arson investigations, determine cause and origin, and interact with the public in accordance with state procedures.

This is a field-based, union position with a hybrid schedule. Applicants must meet education and training requirements and be willing to locate in Perry County within six months of hire. Competitive state benefits apply.

Qualifications

• Requires four-year college degree in fire science, fire science administration, law, forensic science, criminal justice, or criminology.
• Requires either Arson Investigator Trainee training or completion of a full-time law enforcement academy.

Responsibilities

• Conducts a thorough search to determine the cause and origin of fires suspected of arson.
• Examines interior and exterior of buildings, cars, etc., for signs of forcible entry.
• Investigates interior and exterior of buildings, cars, etc., for means of access.
• Creates photographs and videography of the fire scene and remains.
• Determines the method, materials, motive, and malefactor of the arson.
• Performs other duties as required within the scope of duties enumerated above.
