The Office of the State Fire Marshal in Illinois is accepting applications for an Arson Investigator I – Special Agent. The role conducts investigations to determine cause and origin of fires suspected of arson, documents scenes, and prepares evidence for formal review.

Qualified candidates will have four years of college coursework (fire science, criminal justice or related fields), and may have completed Arson Investigator Trainee training or a full-time law enforcement academy; bilingual

Qualifications

Four years college coursework in fire science, fire science administration, law, forensic science, criminal justice, or criminology.
Possession of training as Arson Investigator Trainee or completion of a full-time law enforcement academy is preferred.
Background in interviewing witnesses and handling of evidence is desirable.

Responsibilities

Investigates fires suspected of arson to determine cause and origin.
Examines interiors/exteriors of buildings and vehicles; documents scene with photos/video.
Compiles and files investigative reports and maintains evidence in accordance with policy.
