Job summary

Battelle is seeking a Mechanical Engineer II for a full-time hybrid role in Egg Harbor Township, NJ, supporting the FAA ARFF Research Program. You will apply mechanical, thermal, and fluid principles to design, test, and analyze ARFF technologies and systems, delivering detailed reports and analyses with minimal supervision.

The ideal candidate will have a ABET-accredited Mechanical Engineering degree, at least 5 years of experience, strong writing and communication skills, and the ability to

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
• Ability to apply mechanics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and materials science to solve problems.
• Experience planning and executing engineering projects including design, testing, and analysis.
• Experience with cost estimates, schedules, and risk mitigation.
• Proficient in data collection systems and instrumentation; strong technical writing.
• US citizenship with eligibility for a Public Trust clearance; travel 2–3 times/yr.

Responsibilities

• Provide engineering expertise to ARFF research, testing, and operations.
• Plan, design, and execute fire testing, thermal, fluid, and mechanical experiments.
• Develop test plans, instrumentation layouts, and data acquisition systems.
• Conduct system analysis of mechanical, thermal, fluid, and structural aspects.
• Perform data collection, reduction, and analysis for findings.
• Develop cost estimates, schedules, and risk assessments.
• Identify and troubleshoot issues with test setups and instrumentation.
• Support fabrication, installation, and validation of test articles.
• Manage tasks to ensure timely delivery with minimal supervision.
• Prepare technical reports for FAA stakeholders and internal teams.
• Present technical information to government clients.
• Maintain safety compliance throughout activities.
