Job description

Archaeological Field Technician

Location: Houston, TX

Type: Part-Time

Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson (JMT), a dynamic, employee-owned consulting firm, is seeking a part-time Archaeological Field Technician to assist with Phase I through Phase III archaeological investigations. Candidates should hold a Bachelor's degree in anthropology or a related field, with experience in all phases of archaeological investigation, especially in Texas and Southeastern US regions. Long-term project opportunities may be available.

Benefits include lodging, per diem, and compensated drive time. Compensation ranges from $22.00 to $26.00 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

1. Assist project and senior archaeologists during fieldwork
2. Conduct archaeological surveys, including hand-excavation of Shovel Test Pits (STPs) and trenching
3. Support testing and data recovery efforts through controlled excavations
4. Identify artifacts encountered during excavations

Requirements

• Successful completion of JMT's Motor Vehicle screening
• Valid Driver's License
• Bachelor's degree or an Associate's degree with 5+ years of experience in Archaeology or related fields
• Experience in all archaeological investigation phases
• Ability to perform physically demanding tasks in challenging environmental conditions
• Strong organizational and communication skills, willingness to learn

Preferred Skills

• GPS/Trimble navigation and data collection experience
• Experience with CRM-based archaeological survey/excavation
• Knowledge of Texas and Southeastern US history and prehistory
• Ability to navigate with compass and topographic maps
• Developing site maps and excavation drawings

Working Conditions

Fieldwork predominantly involves outdoor activities in various weather conditions, with some office work. Physical tasks include bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting up to 25 lbs.
