AZTEC is currently seeking qualified Archaeological Crew Chiefs to join our Phoenix, Arizona Cultural Resources Group.

Job Description

This position will assist in the completion of archaeological projects (survey, monitoring, testing, and/or data recovery) for AZTEC's Cultural Resource Group. The position involves leading or assisting a Field Director in leading archaeological fieldwork, as well as performing lab work, database entry, and report preparation. Projects may be located in the Southwest or Great Basin regions. Below is a list of duties for this position.

Duties:

  • Assist with and/or direct archaeological field investigations (testing, data recovery, monitoring, survey, and field documentation)
  • Assist and instruct crew members in the use of proper field methods and completion of field forms based on information provided in a work plan and/or field manual
  • Evaluate the NRHP eligibility of archaeological sites, including assessing significance and evaluating integrity.
  • Complete accurate standard field forms and maps (of sites, features, etc.)
  • Participate in artifact processing and data entry
  • Assist with preparation of technical reports
  • Use a tablet, compass, trowel, shovel, pick, hula hoe, and screen
  • Perform archaeological research and conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories
  • Communicate effectively and work closely with internal and external team members and the public
  • Perform travel that may include overnight and/or out-of-state stays for extended periods of time

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):

  • Minimum of BA or BS in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field; OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in Cultural Resource Management
  • Prior crew chief experience
  • Experience participating in and/or directing survey, testing, data recovery and/or monitoring
  • Ability to qualify at a supervisory level for state and federal archaeological permits in AZ, NV, and/or UT
  • Understanding of Southwest and/or Great Basin prehistory and/or history, archaeological method, and theory
  • Understanding of applicable federal and state Cultural Resource Management/Historic Preservation laws
  • Experience using GPS and GIS applications, particularly ESRI Field Maps, and digital site recording applications
  • Ability to generate, organize, and maintain accurate field records that meet state and federal standards and guidelines
  • Experience authoring or co-authoring technical reports is
  • Ability to perform fieldwork in adverse conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, arid environments, dense vegetation) and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Valid Driver's License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier
