Archaeological Crew Chief/Bioarcheologist

Job Description

This position is designed to assist in the completion of archaeological projects (survey, monitoring, testing, and/or data recovery) for AZTEC's Cultural Resource Group. Projects may be located in the Southwest or Great Basin regions. The position involves (a) assisting the field director in the completion of archaeological fieldwork and performing general lab work, database entry, and report preparation, and (b) conducting typological, technological, functional, and/or morphological analyses of osteological material (human and faunal bone), including all aspects of identification, analysis, archaeological interpretation, and report preparation. Below is a list of duties for this position.

Duties

• Perform all aspects of archaeological field investigations (testing, data recovery, monitoring, survey, and field documentation)
• Perform bioarchaeological analysis in the field and the lab, including collecting metric and non-metric information, completing analysis forms, and preparing information tables
• Use a tablet, compass, trowel, shovel, pick, hula hoe, and screen
• Complete accurate standard field forms and maps (of sites, features, etc.)
• Participate in artifact processing and data entry
• Assist with preparation of technical reports
• Conduct and summarize results of comparative research
• Prepare chapters summarizing methods and results, addressing research questions, and discussing regional comparisons
• Assist crew members with the use of proper field methods and completion of field forms based on information provided in the work plan and/or field manual
• Perform archaeological research and conduct site file searches at federal, state, tribal, and private repositories
• Communicate effectively and work closely with internal and external team members and the public
• Perform travel that may include overnight stays and/or extended out-of-state stays

Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, And Skills)

• Minimum Education: Master’s degree in archaeology/anthropology with a focus in physical anthropology, bioarchaeology, or a closely related field.
• Minimum of three (3) years of experience in Cultural Resource Management.
• Prior crew chief experience preferred.
• Understanding of Southwest and/or Great Basin prehistory and/or history, archaeological method, and theory.
• Arizona archaeology experience preferred.
• Experience participating in and/or directing surveys, testing, data recovery, and/or monitoring.
• Experience using GPS and GIS applications (Tablet, ArcGIS Pro).
• Ability to generate, organize, and maintain accurate field records that meet state and federal standards and guidelines.
• Demonstrated report writing experience. Experience authoring or co-authoring technical reports is preferred. SHPO/THPO concurrence on results of analysis (technical report/chapter) preferred.
• Ability to perform fieldwork in adverse conditions (e.g., rugged terrain, remote locations, hot and cold temperatures, arid environments, dense vegetation) and carry up to 25 pounds of equipment
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Valid Driver's License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company's insurance carrier.
• Understanding of applicable federal and state Cultural Resource Management/Historic Preservation laws is preferred.
