POSITION SUMMARY:

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Maintains active surveillance and control of the pool area in all job functions as assigned. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving. Walks the perimeter of the pool scanning the bottom before taking over the lifeguard stand.
  2. Assists in department program development, administration, and management. Works with Aquatics Director to be innovative with department growth and new programming ideas.
  3. Addressees member concerns, directs members to program areas or lane needs. Supports the overall Aquatic team.
  4. Assists with swim lessons by instructing, conducting swim evaluations and ensuring proper level placement of participants, ensuring continued quality of programs by assisting with training and consistency of Aquatics staff in accordance with YMCA standards established by YMCA Swim Lesson Curriculum.
  5. Serves in various aquatics roles as required (including Lifeguard, Deck Supervisor, & Swim Instructor). Dresses according to dress code policy – Required when guarding: Lifeguard Shirt, bathing suit, whistle, and PPE hip pack (when required).
  6. Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Completes related reports, records, and audits as required. Assists in scheduling and running department Lifeguard and Swim Instructor in-service training.
  7. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Compiles accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code for Aquatic Director review and submission.
  8. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
  9. Performs chemical testing, as required, and takes appropriate action to maintain desired balance.
  10. Maintains effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff.
  11. Demonstrates the ability to establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships, interpersonal skills to interact effectively with individuals and groups regarding social and cultural diversity and the competency and flexibility to carry out job responsibilities as assigned.
  12. Supports the overall membership of the branch by conducting aquatics tours and acting as manager on duty when needed.
  13. Partners with aquatics director to work towards achieving YMCA annual campaign department goals.
  14. Performs other duties as assigned and during shift down time.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Minimum age of 18.
  2. Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen.
  3. Current YMCA or ARC Lifeguard or equivalent.
  4. Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  5. Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
