Responsibilities

  • Direct and supervise program activities to meet community needs and YMCA objectives; develop and expand programs.

  • Monitor daily pool operations to comply with health and safety regulations.
  • Maintain pool facilities; schedule and secure pool spaces; track chemical levels and maintenance.
  • Conduct lifeguarding, swim instruction, oxygen administration, First Aid and CPR training.
  • Create and schedule swim and water fitness classes; assist in marketing program information.
  • Develop and monitor the program budget to meet fiscal objectives; assist in fundraising and events.
  • Communicate with members and respond to inquiries; compile program statistics and assess effectiveness.
  • Substitute for subordinate staff as needed for scheduling and shortages.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Aquatic Director is responsible for developing, organizing and implementing high quality, member-focused YMCA aquatic programs. In addition, every position in the YMCA of Greensboro is responsible for carrying out our promise to strengthen the foundations of community with focus on Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility while upholding our values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Directing and supervising program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. Establishing new program activities and expanding programs within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans. Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with community organizations.
  • Recruiting, hiring, training, developing, scheduling and directing personnel and volunteers as needed. Reviewing and evaluating staff performance. Developing strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals. Ensuring records of staff certifications are current and complete.
  • Monitoring daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Conducting and ensuring proper maintenance of pool(s). Securing and scheduling pool facilities. Maintaining accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Conducting lifeguarding, swim instruction, Oxygen Administration, First Aid, CPR for the professional rescuer, and monthly in-service training.
  • Creating and scheduling swim classes and water fitness classes.
  • Assisting in the marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Developing and monitoring program budget to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Assisting in YMCA fund raising activities and special events as assigned.
  • Modelling relationship building skills in all interactions. Responding to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Compiling program statistics; monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
  • Having the skills and physical abilities necessary to substitute for subordinate employees as required for regular scheduling and staff shortages
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly or indirectly supervises all employee in the Aquatics Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

  • Bachelor's degree in related field and minimum of one year related experience or training; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations. Ability write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals, Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, members and the general public. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations. Ability calculate figures and amounts such as discounts and interest. Ability define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community. Ability to deliver member-driven customer service and establish that culture throughout the Aquatics Department.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to high precarious places, and risk or electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud.
  • Certifications preferred prior to hire current YMCA or Red Cross lifeguard certification, CPR for the professional rescuer, First Aid Certification, AED, Emergency Oxygen Administration and Blood Borne Pathogen Certification. Required within 60 days of hire include a nationally recognized Pool Operator certification. Required within 6 months Lifeguard Instructor Certification. Required within 6 months Swim Lesson Instructor Certification. Recommended - Water Exercise Instructor.
