Job summary

The YMCA in Flushing, Michigan is seeking an Aquatics Director to supervise direct operations, ensure safety during swimming lessons, recreational, and lap swimming, and monitor pool equipment and chemistry. You will lead aquatics staff, schedule trainings, and uphold state regulations and YMCA standards.

You will develop and expand aquatics programming, manage risk, and coordinate ongoing staff development to maintain a safe, welcoming environment for all members and participants.

Qualifications

  • Red Cross Lifeguard certification within 90 days
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid
  • Emergency Oxygen Administration

General Function

Responsible for the direct supervision, control, and safety of members and participants during swimming lessons, recreational, and lap swimming. The Aquatics Director will also monitor aquatic facility staff, equipment, and pool chemistry.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Support the Mission, Vision, and Direction of the YMCA
  • Organize, develop, schedule, and administer the daily operation of aquatics programming
  • Ensure compliance with state regulations and Y-USA standards for aquatics
  • Establish new activities and expand current aquatics programs within the community in accordance with YMCA standards
  • Ensure a culture of safety. Lead practices and procedures in accordance with regulations, national safety and training standards, insurance, and Y-USA guidelines.
  • Train, direct, schedule, and supervise lifeguards and swim instructors.
  • Ensure staff certifications are current and complete and keep meticulous records
  • Schedule and organize monthly in-service training to ensure staff are certified and ready to respond in required areas
  • Assist with hiring and performance management of lifeguards and swim instructors
  • Assist as needed with YMCA operations, building coverage, meetings, and special events.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the pool chemicals and mechanical systems
  • Other duties as assigned.
Risk Management responsibilities
  • Follow employee and volunteer screening requirements and use screening instruments to screen for abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with ongoing supervision and training related to abuse risk.
  • Provide employees and volunteers with regular feedback regarding their boundaries with children.
  • Require employees and volunteers to adhere to policies and procedures related to abuse risk.
  • Respond quickly to policy and procedure violations using the organization’s progressive disciplinary procedures.
  • Respond seriously and confidentially to reports of suspicious and inappropriate behaviors.
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements.
  • Communicate to all employees and volunteers the organization’s commitment to protect their children from abuse.
  • Report essential abuse risk management information to the appropriate staff.
  • Utilize various sources of information to ensure compliance with abuse prevention standards
Requirements

Must possess or obtain within the first 90 days of employment:

  • Red Cross Lifeguard certification
  • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid
  • Emergency Oxygen Administration

Must possess or obtain within the first 120 days of employment:

  • Certified Pool Operator
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor
