Job summary

GFL Environmental Inc. in North Carolina is seeking an Apprentice Mechanic to learn how to maintain and repair our waste and recycling fleet. You will perform routine maintenance, diagnostics, and major repairs on refuse trucks to ensure safe and reliable operations.

This role requires owning a basic set of tools, a valid driver's license (CDL preferred or willingness to obtain), and at least 1 year of diesel technician experience. Expect 10am start with long shifts and overtime after 40 hours.

Qualifications

• Minimum 1 year experience as a diesel technician/mechanic.
• Own a personal set of basic mechanic tools.
• Valid driver's license; CDL preferred or willing to obtain.
• Strong knowledge of hydraulics, air brakes, diesel engines, and electrical troubleshooting.
• Able to lift up to 50 lbs in a fast-paced shop environment.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel engines and hydraulic systems.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical issues.
• Repair and maintain waste fleet equipment (compressors, hydraulic cylinders, lift systems).
• Conduct safety inspections ensuring DOT and company standards.
• Maintain accurate work orders and fleet maintenance records.
• Maintain a clean, safe shop environment; follow OSHA and DOT safety protocols.

Location: 2211 Hwy 301 N Halifax NC 27839

Pay Rate: $26-$31/hr. More pay available based on experience, certifications, and skill level.

Hours / Shift: 10am Start Time. Expect 10-12hr shifts M-F. Immediate OT after 40hrs worked.

About the Role

We are seeking a Apprentice Mechanic to learn how to maintain and repair our waste and recycling fleet. In this role, you will learn and perform routine maintenance, diagnostics, and major repairs on refuse trucks (rear loaders, side loaders, front loaders, and roll-offs) to ensure safe and reliable operations.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance (PMs), inspections, and repairs on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and pneumatic/air brake systems.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical issues using diagnostic software and tools.
• Repair and maintain specialized waste equipment (compressors, hydraulic cylinders, automated arms, and lift systems).
• Conduct safety inspections to ensure compliance with DOT and company standards.
• Maintain clean and accurate work orders and fleet maintenance records.
• Maintain a clean, safe work environment and adhere to all OSHA and DOT safety protocols.

Requirements & Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum 1 year experience as a diesel technician/mechanic.
• Tools: Must own a personal set of basic mechanics tools.
• License: Valid Driver’s License required (Class A or B CDL preferred, or willingness to obtain).
