Job summary

Indiana University Bloomington is seeking candidates for the Facility Operations apprentice role within CPF. The position focuses on maintaining and repairing elevators and related equipment, while supporting the apprenticeship program under journey-level supervision.

Roles include hands-on work, safety compliance, and completing classroom training. Selected apprentices will engage in a 4-year program with on-the-job training and scheduled coursework, with classroom hours paid by IU and sessions

Qualifications

• May need to obtain QEI license and OSHA certifications.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair elevators, escalators, chairlifts, conveyors, and machine rooms/pits.

• Read schematics, troubleshoot and report inspection results.
• Order parts through supervisor and perform replacements as needed.
• Drive vehicle as part of duties.

FACILITY OPERATIONS-IUB (BL-PHYP-IUBLA)

Capital Planning and Facilities (CPF) works to ensure that IU campuses are beautiful, functional, and sustainable supporting excellence in teaching, learning, research, and community engagement across the entire university. A unit within CPF, Facility Operations, maintains our physical campus to support research, teaching, and learning at Indiana University Bloomington. As a unit of Capital Planning and Facilities, Facility Operations provides wide-ranging services all with the goal of creating a beautiful, well-functioning campus.

General Responsibilities

• Maintains and repairs elevators, escalators, chairlifts, conveyors. and machine rooms/pits. Inspects wiring connection, control panel hookups, door installation, and alignment and clearance of car hoistway.
• Operates elevator to determine power demand and tests power consumption to detect overload factors. Reads schematics and troubleshoots elevator malfunctions. May perform acceptance and routine inspections, witness tests, and report results of the inspection and testing.
• Orders parts through supervisor. Repairs and replaces worn/damaged components as needed. Cleans, repairs, or replaces controller components as needed. Cleans machine room and elevator pits.
• Removes passengers from stuck elevators.
• Performs work under the guidance of a journey level elevator mechanic
• Completes assigned apprentice coursework
• Performs other general building maintenance as needed.
• Drives vehicle.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication, the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position one's self in low level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

Indiana University Apprenticeship Program (IUAP), Bloomington Campus, is accepting applications for 2 Apprentice positions in the Elevator craft work. The work shifts can vary from first and second shifts. The selected candidates will engage in a 4-year apprenticeship training program within the Facility Operations department that will involve

• On-the-job training under the guidance of journey-level workers.
• Related classroom training over the duties and responsibilities of the associated trade.

Selected candidate is required to successfully complete approximately 144 classroom training hours during each of the 4 years of the apprenticeship period. The classroom sessions are paid by IU. The hours of required classroom attendance are non-compensated. Classroom sessions generally occur twice per week and are scheduled outside of the daily work hours.

Applicants must meet the minimum WorkKeys assessment levels in the following sections: Applied Math, Applied Technology, Locating Information, and Reading for Information.
