Dynamic Devices develops liquid handling automation workstations for the Life Sciences and Clinical/Diagnostic industries. Our systems help scientists and laboratory teams improve efficiency, reliability, and workflow performance through flexible automation solutions. We bring together applications, hardware, software, and engineering expertise to help customers put automation to work in their laboratories.

Position: Applications & R&D Engineer

We are seeking an Applications & R&D Engineer to join our team at the Grimes, Iowa office. Reporting to the Technical Director, this position will support the Western Applications and Sales group with pre‑sales and post‑sales application solutions. The role also provides opportunities to contribute to R&D development projects and assist with technology transfer to our manufacturing team.

This position combines hands‑on applications work, technical problem‑solving, and collaboration across departments. We are looking for someone who can understand customer requirements, develop practical solutions, and work both independently and cooperatively as part of a small, technically diverse team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Applications Support: Work with the Western Applications and Sales group to develop and support application solutions for prospective and existing customers.
  • Method Development: Develop, test, and refine automated instrument methods, translating customer workflows and project requirements into practical applications.
  • Demonstrations and Evaluations: Assist Sales with instrument demonstrations, application evaluations, and technical discussions during pre‑sales and post‑sales activities.
  • R&D Collaboration: Work with the R&D engineering team on development projects, product testing, and improvements informed by application needs and customer feedback.
  • Technology Transfer: Assist with transferring development work and supporting technical information to the manufacturing team as assigned.
  • Documentation and Teamwork: Document methods, testing, and technical findings, and communicate with applications, sales, engineering, and manufacturing colleagues to support project progress.
Qualifications
  • Hands‑on experience with laboratory automation, applications development, or related engineering work.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to translate technical requirements into workable solutions.
  • Comfort working with laboratory instrumentation, hardware, and software.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to explain technical information to customers and colleagues.
  • Ability to work independently, manage project priorities, and collaborate across technical and commercial teams.
  • Ability to work in‑office at our Grimes, Iowa location.
Preferred Skills (Pluses)
  • Experience implementing automated workflows in life sciences, biotechnology, or a related laboratory environment.
  • Familiarity with automation programming or scripting, such as C#, Python, or similar languages.
  • Experience with CAD modeling, 3D printing, or hands‑on prototype development.
  • Understanding of instrument communications, including TCP/IP, RS232, and networking.
