Job description

The Applications Programmer I is an entry-level position, the primary responsibility of which is to gain an in-depth knowledge of programming tools and techniques in the BCBSMS application development environment. The incumbent is expected to complete assigned training modules on mainframe programming and claims systems, and become proficient enough to support technology initiatives. Under close supervision, the incumbent will also be responsible for preparing new programs and program modifications, primarily in a mainframe environment, using supplied functional program specifications for new and revised systems, and for executing appropriate testing, debugging and support processes.

Job-Specific Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or a related field is required.
• A working familiarity with computer languages (COBOL, C, C++ or Java) is required.
• Some exposure to SDLC Methodology is preferred.
• Some exposure to mainframe programming experience using COBOL, JCL, and TSO/ISPF is preferred.
• Proficiency in LAN, Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Visio is highly preferred.
• Familiarity with Business Writing, Project Management, Time Management and Teamwork concepts and practice is preferred.
