Organizational Summary

Research & Innovation (R&I) is a vice presidential area charged with system-wide administration of the USF Research Enterprise, which generates over $730 million in sponsored contracts and grants annually. It supports a USF Research Park with a business incubator. R&I provides guidance and oversight to seven divisions/units across multiple campuses and locations to ensure appropriate investment of university resources and compliance with federal regulations.

Position Summary

The position is responsible for developing, managing, and documenting USF Research & Innovation's portal, databases, applications, and intranet. It serves as the lead application engineer on complex software development projects, including automations and integrations, throughout the entire application lifecycle—analysis, coding, testing, and documentation. The role requires extensive professional experience in application programming, system integration, database design, and application maintenance. The Senior Application Developer acts as a subject matter expert on software, security, and application administration within a complex enterprise environment and is a key member of the Applications Development Team in USF Research Information Services. The team includes an experienced Associate Director/Senior Application Developer, a Web Developer, and an Application Developer I supporting the Research Integrity and Compliance team.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, MIS, or a related field involving software and analytical skills, plus four years of IT-related work experience; or a Bachelor's degree in any field with five years of IT experience; or a Master's degree with three years of IT experience; or a combination of eight years of IT experience and validated training. Preparation for relevant IT certifications is considered related training.

Responsibilities

1. Analyze business requirements and data needs. Develop and maintain reliable, scalable database systems. Use industry-standard programming languages and frameworks to create efficient solutions that align with university, state, and federal standards, policies, and regulations, including protections for health information.
2. Lead needs assessments and develop solutions for customers. Design, implement, and support software applications and integrated database solutions, including interfacing with USF enterprise systems. Collaborate with stakeholders and partners during detailed application design.
3. Configure application interfaces, styles, and branding using standard tools. Maintain modular interface components for rapid deployment. Develop interface guidelines and create user and technical documentation.
4. Troubleshoot application and integration issues across platforms (production, QA, test, development). Provide technical and end-user support, liaising with stakeholders and external departments. Manage the maintenance of Research Operational Data Store databases and USF enterprise databases (Oracle, Azure Lakehouse).
5. Research emerging technologies and assess their applicability to USF Research Systems, databases, security, and user interfaces. Ensure solutions are scalable for future needs.
6. Perform other duties as assigned.
