About the Role
The Field Chemist role combines chemistry expertise, hands‑on electromechanical support, and proactive client relationship development. Based in the Northeast Region (MD, DE, NJ, PA, NY, CT, RI, MA, VT, NH, ME), you will manage an established territory of Milestone clients and serve as a trusted technical resource throughout the customer lifecycle.
You will install and maintain laboratory instrumentation, deliver client training and applications support, and proactively engage customers to understand their evolving laboratory needs. These relationships will help you identify opportunities for after‑market support and additional Milestone solutions.
The ideal candidate is equally comfortable working hands‑on with laboratory instrumentation and building consultative client relationships. This role requires strong chemistry knowledge, mechanical aptitude, a client‑focused mindset, and the ability to independently manage a travel‑intensive territory.
Responsibilities:
Installations & Proactive Maintenance
- Install Milestone instrumentation, including setup, calibration, testing, and client onboarding.
- Perform preventative and major maintenance to support instrument performance and reliability.
- Maintain accountability for assigned tools, parts, and equipment.
Chemistry Applications Support
- Train clients on instrument operation, applications, methods, and laboratory best practices.
- Help clients resolve application‑related challenges and improve use of Milestone instrumentation.
- Support demonstrations, roadshows, and other pre‑sales activities with Product and Sales.
- Maintain expertise across Milestone technologies and applications.
Client Engagement & Opportunity Development
- Build trusted client relationships through scheduled work, proactive outreach, and courtesy visits.
- Use consultative conversations to understand client workflows, challenges, and future needs, and educate clients on solutions to improve their operations.
- Identify opportunities for consumables, accessories, service contracts, upgrades, and new instrumentation that improve client workflows and outcomes.
- Provide timely post‑visit communication outlining recommendations and next steps.
Territory Management
- Manage travel, scheduling, customer commitments, and work‑order priorities across the assigned territory.
- Maintain accurate customer, work‑order, and activity documentation.
- Manage assigned inventory and demo equipment accurately and responsibly.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related scientific field
- Laboratory Experience: 2 years of hands‑on laboratory experience. Experience with analytical instrumentation, sample preparation, or metals analysis preferred.
- Electromechanical Ability: Strong electromechanical aptitude and comfort working hands‑on with instrumentation hardware. Field service, instrument maintenance, or other technical experience is a plus.
- Client Development: Ability to understand customer needs, recommend solutions, and recognize opportunities to expand the client relationship. Prior applications, technical sales, or similar customer‑facing experience is a plus.
- Communication: Strong communication skills with the ability to train clients and explain scientific and technical concepts clearly.
- Travel & Independence: Experience independently managing a travel‑intensive territory, including frequent overnight travel (up to 4 clients per week).
- Computer skills: Proficiency with Microsoft Office; Salesforce or other CRM experience is a plus.
- Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
