Position Announcement: Animal Shelter Attendant

*Position will remain open until filled*

We are seeking a dedicated individual to perform activities related to operating our animal shelter. Responsibilities include cleaning and disinfecting kennels, cages, and runs; feeding and handling animals; and performing maintenance tasks within the facility. The role also involves clerical duties such as maintaining records and files, and interacting with the public for animal adoptions and boarding services. Work is conducted under the supervision of the Animal Shelter Manager.

Starting salary is $34,117.79 annually, with potential for negotiation based on experience and skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Perform daily maintenance activities including watering, feeding, and cleaning of animals and their enclosures.
  2. Disinfect kennels and cages daily; report behavioral changes to the Shelter Manager.
  3. Administer vaccines and medications; assist with surgeries.
  4. Handle clerical tasks such as answering phones, resolving public concerns, and maintaining computer records including vaccination and adoption data.
  5. Collect fees for adoptions, vaccinations, and related services.
  6. Serve as backup for other shelter attendants as needed.
  7. Ensure humane handling of all animals.
  8. Follow safety protocols and participate in weekend and holiday rotations.
  9. Respond to emergencies and disasters as essential personnel.
  10. Perform euthanasia following shelter protocols.
  11. Complete other related tasks as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
  • General knowledge of animal care, feeding, and behavior.
  • Understanding of state and county animal control laws and policies.
  • Basic math skills and ability to accurately process transactions and records.
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Experience with computer systems, including websites and photo uploads, preferred.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required; at least one year of kennel or shelter experience preferred. Education in animal behavior and shelter operations is a plus.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Must obtain Euthanasia Technician Certification and Rabies Vaccinator License within six months of hire.
  • Valid North Carolina driver’s license required.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

This position is safety-sensitive and subject to substance abuse testing. Must be physically capable of performing duties that may involve heavy lifting, stooping, and running. Work environment includes exposure to dust, noise, fumes, odors, and variable weather conditions, including outdoor work.
