The basic responsibility of this position is to provide veterinary health care services to laboratory animal populations under the direct supervision of an Animal Resources Veterinarian or Senior Animal Health Technologist.
Assists in preventive medicine programs, including physical examinations, vaccinations, disease control, health surveillance, and dental prophylaxis. Supports environmental enrichment programs for all species.
Assists in the maintenance and operation of the aseptic surgical suite, including pre-, peri-, and post-operative care, anesthesia induction and maintenance, pain management, fluid and antibiotic administration, and wound care.
Participates in large and small animal health rounds, communicating abnormalities to the veterinarian.
Collects specimens and submits samples to diagnostic laboratories.
Participates in training and workshops to enhance technical skills and knowledge.
Administers basic veterinary treatments under guidance.
Ensures compliance with animal welfare regulations, maintains safety, and keeps proper records per SOPs and policies.
Work may include scheduled weekends, holidays, and occasional off-hours.
Ability to triage clinical cases, identify abnormal presentations, calculate and administer medications, operate diagnostic equipment, and maintain medical records. Knowledge of animal welfare regulations, excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills. Proficiency with MS applications and medical terminology.
Associate or bachelor’s degree in veterinary animal health technology or equivalent, with at least one year of practical veterinary technical experience. AALAS certification is desirable.
