Are you passionate about animal health and eager to make a difference in a dynamic research environment? We are seeking a skilled and motivated Veterinary Health Technician to join our team. In this role, you will provide veterinary healthcare services to laboratory animal populations under the supervision of an Animal Resources Veterinarian or Senior Animal Health Technologist. You will be instrumental in preventive care programs, surgical support, animal health assessments, and compliance with animal welfare standards, while continuously advancing your technical skills through training and development opportunities.
Support the preventive medicine program, including physical examinations, vaccinations, disease control, health surveillance programs, and dental prophylaxis.
Assist with the environmental enrichment program for all laboratory animal species.
Maintain and operate the aseptic surgical suite, providing pre-, peri-, and post-operative care (including induction and maintenance of anesthesia, pain management, fluid and antibiotic administration, and wound care).
Participate in large and small animal health rounds and report abnormalities to the Animal Resources Veterinarian.
Collect specimens and submit samples for diagnostic laboratory analysis.
Administer basic veterinary treatments under veterinarian guidance.
Participate in in-service training sessions and workshops to enhance technical skills and knowledge base.
Ensure compliance with applicable animal welfare regulations, practice safe work habits, and maintain detailed records in accordance with SOPs and policies.
Work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays, and occasional off-hours as needed.
Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree in veterinary animal health technology or an equivalent program that includes a minimum of one year of hands-on veterinary technical experience.
AALAS certification (or willingness to obtain) is desirable.
Ability to triage clinical cases and veterinary emergencies and distinguish normal from abnormal clinical presentations across a variety of laboratory animal species.
Proficiency in calculating and administering medications through various routes.
Skilled in operating basic veterinary diagnostic equipment and writing comprehensive medical records.
Strong working knowledge of animal welfare regulations and medical terminology.
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
