Job summary

City of Beverly seeks an Animal Control Officer to enforce state and local animal control laws, inspect premises, and respond to wild and domestic animal incidents within Beverly. The role requires 35 hours per week with supervision by the Chief of Police and union membership with BMEA.

The officer will patrol streets, parks, and beaches, seize or return animals, and file court-ready complaints. Must meet licensing and certification requirements and may engage in 24-hour emergency responses.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and at least one year of experience in the care and handling of domestic, farm, and wild animals; previous experience as an ACO or related field desired.
• Knowledge of state and local laws and regulations pertaining to animal control and animal health.
• Must be certified as an Animal Control Officer or obtain certification within 12 months of hire.
• Massachusetts License to Carry Firearms or obtain within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Enforce state and local animal control laws and regulations.
• Patrol Beverly roads, parks, and public spaces to locate stray animals.
• Return or impound stray animals and issue citations for violations.
• Prepare/docket complaints for court hearings and respond to public inquiries.
• Investigate animal abuse, bites, and distress and coordinate with veterinary facilities when needed.
• Coordinate with other agencies for emergency animal response and rescue duties.
