This vacancy resides in the University's New Iberia Research Center.

THIS POSITION HAS A SPECIAL ENTRANCE RATE (SER) OF $15.18/HOUR.

This position is located at the New Iberia Research Center 4401 W. Admiral Doyle Dr. New Iberia, LA 70506.

PLEASE NOTE: Incumbent will be performing animal care duties. Applicants who have a fear of large animals need not apply. Preferred applicants will be capable of the following:

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Stand for long periods
  • Climb ladders & stairs
  • Work with arms above the head for periods of 5-10 minutes
  • Perform basic sanitation practices - mopping, scrubbing, pressure washing
  • Ability to withstand extreme temperatures
  • Operate motor vehicle
  • Distinguish colors
  • Follow oral and written instructions
  • Understand Standard Operating Procedures and follow them
  • Have tolerance to animal hair and dander
  • Write legibly
  • Problem solve

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years of general laboratory experience; OR
Completion of an accredited clinical laboratory or medical laboratory technology program; OR
An associate or bachelor’s degree in medical technology, nursing, clinical laboratory science, or a biological, physical, or chemical science; OR
Certification as a Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technologist by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in any of the biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural sciences will substitute for one year of experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Positions in Human Testing Laboratory environments must be licensed to practice as either a Laboratory Assistant or a Clinical Laboratory Scientist-Technician in the State of Louisiana as required by Louisiana Clinical Laboratory Personnel Law R.S. 37:1311-1329 and the Louisiana State Board of Medical Examiners.
FUNCTION OF WORK: To perform a variety of laboratory tasks on the basis of technical knowledge and specific skills.
LEVEL OF WORK: Entry.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Close from laboratory personnel of a higher level.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: None.
LOCATION OF WORK: Clinical laboratories, educational or health care facilities; Statewide.
JOB DISTINCTIONS: Differs from Laboratory Technician 2 and Laboratory Technical Assistants by the preparation of laboratory specimens to be evaluated by higher level laboratory personnel.

EXAMPLES BELOW ARE A BRIEF SAMPLE OF COMMON DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS JOB TITLE. NOT ALL POSSIBLE TASKS ARE INCLUDED.

Performs veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol on patients to obtain blood for requested analysis.

Interviews, screens, and performs sterile veni-puncture in keeping with standard protocol to obtain 500 ML whole blood for use in the blood bank.

Prepares laboratory specimens such as blood, urine, stool, and sputum for diagnostic evaluation.

Prepares feces and other materials for examination for the presence of ova and parasites.

Prepares, embeds, cuts, stains, mounts, labels, and catalogues tissue sections.

Prepares, stains cover slips, and catalogues cytology specimens.

Prepares reagents, soils, and plant and animal tissues for analysis to identify pH, lime, organic matter, minor elements, soluble salts, etc.

Operates pH meters, salt bridges, balances and colorimeters, calibrating as necessary.

Performs microscopic examination, records, and reports test results.
