Job Summary:

The Comparative Medicine Trainee supports daily operations within a laboratory animal facility. The role is essential in maintaining sanitation and ensuring the safe, humane care of research animals. Duties include operating equipment, cage sanitation, and documenting to meet federal and institutional guidelines. This position offers hands-on experience in a biomedical research setting.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide clean cages, water, and food to animals.
  • Remove bedding and waste materials.
  • Identify and report damaged caging equipment.
  • Equipment Operation & Maintenance:
  • Operate autoclaves, tunnel washers, rack washers, and other washroom equipment.
  • Perform basic equipment maintenance and log performance data.
  • Facility Sanitation:
  • Clean and disinfect workspaces, cage wash areas, and hallways.
  • Maintain PPE and supply inventory.
  • Autoclave all required materials.
  • Monitor and record environmental and animal health conditions.
  • Adhere to safety protocols for BSL-2 and BSL-3 environments.
  • Recordkeeping & Compliance:
  • Follow SOPs and accurately complete documentation logs.
  • Participate in regular training and contribute to quality assurance efforts.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Less than 1 year of animal care experience
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work in high-temperature, noisy, or odor-heavy environments

Preferred:

  • Previous exposure to laboratory or animal care settings (not mandatory)
  • Exposure to animal waste, disinfectants, loud equipment, and extreme temperatures (>85°F)
  • Must wear PPE and adhere to all biohazard and chemical safety procedures
  • Possible contact with animals, sharp tools, glassware, and infectious materials
