Job summary

The Dane County Humane Society is seeking an Animal Behavior Manager to lead the behavior department and oversee the care and behavior modification plans for dogs and cats in residence. You will design enrichment, design and implement behavior programs, and collaborate across shelter teams to support placement and welfare decisions.

Responsibilities include supervising staff, reviewing intake behavior profiles, and guiding placement, foster, rescue or euthanasia decisions as needed, while

Qualifications

• B.A. or B.S. in an animal behavior field required; advanced degree preferred.
• Certification in animal behavior/training from ABS, IAABC, or APDT.
• Minimum of five years’ experience in animal shelters.
• Minimum of two years’ experience managing personnel; shelter management preferred.
• Strong leadership and written/verbal communication skills.
• Commitment to positive, science-based training and animal welfare philosophy.

Responsibilities

• Oversee supervision of the behavior team and ensure policy implementation.
• Review behavior profiles and oversee decisions on placement, foster, rescue or euthanasia.
• Design in-house behavior modification plans and enrichment programs.
• Attend daily rounds and develop SOPs for behavior concerns.
• Provide training and consultations for volunteers and staff.
• Coordinate surrender, adoption, foster, and post-adoption counseling.
• Assume additional responsibilities as assigned.
