Job summary

The MetroHealth System in Cleveland, OH, is seeking a Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant to join its Anesthesia Care Team (ACT). CAAs collaborate with staff anesthesiologists, SAAs, residents, CRNAs and SRNAs to provide high-quality perioperative anesthesia care across procedures.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with prerequisite premedical undergraduate science background is required.
  • Graduation from a CAAHEP-accredited anesthesia assistant program.
  • Current Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA) certification and NCCAA recertification as applicable.
  • Current CAA licensure from the state medical board.
  • ACLS & BLS certifications currently active.
  • Demonstrates current competency in the clinical responsibilities specified below.

Responsibilities

  • Perform a pre-anesthetic assessment, discuss anesthetic management, and administer anesthesia under supervision.
  • Assemble, prepare, and test needed supplies, equipment and monitors prior to an anesthetic.
  • Selects, obtains and administers the anesthetic plan of care including induction, maintenance and emergence.

Hours

Monday-Friday
80 hours biweekly, Shift variability upon request, minimal in-house weekend call requirement

Education Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited school with a bachelor’s degree that includes the prerequisite premedical undergraduate science background
  • Graduate of a medical school-based anesthesiologist’s assistant education program that is accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)
  • Current Certified Anesthesiologist Assistant (CAA) certification and recertification by the National Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants (NCCAA)
  • Current CAA Licensure from the Ohio State Medical Board
  • Current ACLS & BLS Certifications
  • Demonstrates current competency in the clinical responsibilities specified below.
Job Responsibilities
  • Perform a pre-anesthetic assessment, discuss anesthetic management, and administer anesthesia, all with the consultation of an appropriate staff anesthesiologist in accordance with accepted standards of professional practice, and licensing laws.
  • Assemble, prepare, and test needed supplies, equipment and monitors prior to an anesthetic.
  • Selects, obtains and administers the anesthetic plan of care, including induction, maintenance and emergence phases of anesthesia.
  • Administer various types of anesthesia, including inhalation, intravenous, spinal, epidural, and peripheral nerve blocks. All anesthesia is administered under the medical direction of staff anesthesiologists.
  • Recognizes alterations in physiologic responses to the surgical procedure and/or the anesthetic, takes appropriate action and notifies the responsible physician as indicated.
  • Transfer the patient to the appropriate postoperative area and assist in the postoperative care.
  • Participate in the quality improvement activities and research initiatives within MHS.
Physical Requirements
  • Requires full range of motion; manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods of time and the ability to lift and transport patients.
  • Requires corrected hearing and vision to normal range.
  • Requires some exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
  • Ability to work under extreme pressure.
