Job summary

The University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine invites applications for a 3-year residency in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. The program provides broad exposure to basic and applied pathology and prepares residents for ACVP board examination.

Responsibilities include diagnostic service, teaching veterinary students, and board preparation with professional development. On-site work is expected; a small remote component may be available.

Qualifications

• Applicants must have a DVM degree or an equivalent degree by the start date (July 1, 2027) and must possess excellent communication skills.
• Candidates from non-English speaking programs should provide GRE and TOEFL scores.

• 45% Diagnostic Service: participate in diagnostic activities of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, including necropsy examinations, tissue collection, histopathologic evaluation, interpretation of findings, and preparation of diagnostic reports.
• 40% Teaching: assist with instruction in veterinary student pathology laboratories and supervise necropsy rotations.
• 10% Board Preparation/Development: study for ACVP board examination, attend seminars and journal clubs, complete readings and case reviews.
• 5% Miscellaneous Duties: participate in QA/QI activities, maintain standards and documentation, and support departmental meetings and residency activities.

Job description

The College of Veterinary Medicine is accepting applications for our 3‑year training position in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology. The residency training program is designed to provide broad exposure to basic and applied aspects of veterinary pathology and to prepare the trainee for a career in veterinary pathology. Residents successfully completing the program are qualified to take the ACVP Board examination.

Job Responsibilities

• 45% Diagnostic Service:
  • Participate in the diagnostic activities of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, including necropsy examinations, tissue collection, histopathologic evaluation, interpretation of findings, and preparation of diagnostic reports.
  • Develop and apply skills in veterinary anatomic pathology through supervised evaluation of a diverse caseload involving domestic, companion, production, wildlife, zoo, and exotic animal species.
  • Collaborate with faculty pathologists, diagnosticians, and laboratory personnel in case review and diagnostic decision‑making.
• 40% Teaching:
  • Assist with instruction in veterinary student pathology laboratories.
  • Provide guidance and training to senior veterinary students during necropsy rotations.
  • Participate in educational activities that support the teaching mission of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
• 10% Board Preparation and Professional Development:
  • Engage in structured study and training activities designed to prepare for the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) board examination.
  • Attend and actively participate in pathology seminars, rounds, journal clubs, and other educational conferences.
  • Complete assigned readings, case reviews, and self‑directed learning activities to develop competency in anatomic pathology and related disciplines.
  • Pursue professional development opportunities that support progression toward ACVP board certification.
• 5% Miscellaneous Duties:
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities within the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
  • Assist with maintaining laboratory standards, documentation, and compliance with applicable accreditation and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, residency program activities, and other duties as assigned in support of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory and the Department of Veterinary Population Medicine.

Location and Work Environment

• This position is primarily in‑person.
• Residents are housed in the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Room E220, and the position is expected to be performed on‑site for the vast majority of work activities.
• A limited remote component may be available, comprising less than 10% of the appointment.

Work Schedule

• The expected work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
• Additional work hours, including evenings and weekends, will be scheduled as needed.

Required Qualifications

• Applicants must have a DVM degree or an equivalent degree from a foreign university by the start date (July 1, 2027) and must possess excellent communication skills.
• Candidate selection is based on the applicant’s academic record, experience, recommendations, and evidence of a commitment to a career in veterinary pathology.
• Individuals who have graduated from a non‑English speaking veterinary program should provide GRE and TOEFL scores.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated commitment to veterinary pathology.

Pay and Benefits

• Pay Rate: $41,293 annually.
