Job summary

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is hiring a Public Participation Specialist (Analyst II) in the Office of Environmental Equity’s Southern California region to provide public outreach and engagement services to California communities.

Job Description And Duties

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is hiring a Public Participation Specialist (Analyst II classification) in our Office of Environmental Equity’s (OEE) Southern California region to provide public outreach and engagement services to California communities.

The selected candidate will facilitate effective and timely communication between the public and DTSC and will work collaboratively with California’s diverse communities on a variety of environmental cleanup projects and initiatives, regarding the regulation of hazardous waste facilities. Candidates must establish and maintain community‑oriented relationships, as well as implement legally required Public Participation activities to ensure communities have meaningful opportunities to participate in DTSC’s decision‑making processes. In addition, the selected candidates must demonstrate the ability to address issues and conflicts early, which might otherwise result in project delays.

• Serve as the primary contact for the implementation and progress of Public Outreach and Engagement projects in the Southern California regions
• Provide public participation support to DTSC core programs and overall OEE program support
• Coordinate communication and outreach efforts with stakeholders such as local, state, and federal elected officials’ offices, DTSC team members at all levels, Environmental Justice groups, community‑based organizations, residents, businesses, and community members
• Facilitate effective and timely communication between the public and the Department
• Function as a member of the DTSC core program workgroups and the OEE Public Outreach and Engagement Program
• Contribute to all programs with involvement in delivering and designing program communication components (i.e., PowerPoint presentations, scripts, webinars, etc.), project management, and participating in departmental strategic teams
