Job summary

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is hiring a Senior Public Participation Specialist for the Santa Susana Field Laboratory Project (SSFL). This hybrid, permanent, full-time role is based at the Chatsworth Regional Office in Los Angeles County.

You will lead senior-level public participation outreach, coordinating with diverse stakeholders, and facilitating engagement activities to support DTSC regulatory decisions.

Job Description And Duties

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) is hiring a Senior Public Participation Specialist for the Santa Susana Field Laboratory Project (SSFL), a DTSC environmental project for communities that suffer from multiple sources of contamination. If you are aware of an individual that may have a passion for environmental justice, social, and racial equity, and wants to be a part of a diverse and dynamic team, please share this hiring opportunity!

In this position, the individual will work independently performing Senior Level Public Participation Outreach and Engagement activities associated with the planning, coordination, facilitation, and all other activities required to further engage the public in underserved communities related to the SSFL project. Hybrid position (telework/field work). This position will require field work to support the communities we serve.

• Facilitate two-way communication between the public and the department on this complex and controversial project with a multitude of stakeholders and ensure external stakeholders have opportunities to participate in DTSC's decision making processes
• Independently develop, implement, and evaluate public engagement activities related to the development and adoption of regulations affecting the SSFL project
• Use analytical reasoning to leverage applicable laws, industry insights, and stakeholder feedback to guide content strategy for production of public participation documents
• Use public meeting management principles to plan, organize, notice, and manage in-person and virtual educational programs (meetings, events, workshops)
• Analyze and report on community information to make data-driven decisions about public participation approaches
• Manage the planning, execution, and evaluation of strategic outreach and awareness campaigns related to the development and adoption of SSFL communications and messaging for the project including operations, regulations, alignment with DTSC, messaging goals, and project objectives
