Job summary

Adirondack Mountain Club (ADK) invites applicants for Summit Steward roles to educate hikers about the rare alpine ecosystem of the High Peaks and to promote responsible outdoor recreation. Stewards will live and work outdoors during the five-day backcountry schedule, performing interpretive education and field-based duties in collaboration with the Summit Steward Coordinator.

The position focuses on education (50%), trail maintenance (40%), and research (10%), with responsibilities including

Qualifications

• A passion for outdoor education and commitment to the club's mission.
• Self-driven, able to work mostly independently with minimal supervision.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with diverse people.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail for project management.
• Willingness to live and work outdoors in inclement weather.
• Ability to hike 5–10 miles over rough terrain with a heavy pack.

Responsibilities

• Educate hikers about alpine ecology and Leave No Trace on summits.
• Provide accurate trail information and interpretive education.
• Assist in monitoring and protecting endangered alpine flora on high peaks.
• Contribute to trail maintenance projects and building structures as needed.
• Collect population data for NY Natural Heritage Program and related research.
