Qualifications

Job Description:

The City of Idaho Falls is accepting applications for a Facility Maintenance Specialist I. This position performs entry-level to semi-skilled work in the maintenance, repair, inspection, and upkeep of airport buildings, facilities, grounds, equipment, systems, and related infrastructure. Assists with preventive maintenance, minor construction, repair work, seasonal operations, and airport-specific facility support under the direction of the Facility Manager or assigned higher-level staff.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Facility Maintenance Specialist I is an entry-level position within the Facility Maintenance job class at the Idaho Falls Regional Airport. Employees perform routine and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, inspection, and support duties under supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop working knowledge of airport facilities, building systems, tools, safety practices, work order procedures, and regulatory requirements. Advancement to higher levels in the class series requires demonstrated proficiency, increased independence, broader technical skill, the ability to perform more complex assignments, and satisfaction of the minimum qualifications established for the higher-level classification.

Supervision Received

Works under the supervision of the Facility Manager. Receives technical direction and project specific instruction from higher-level staff.

Essential Functions

Performs entry-level and semi-skilled duties related to the maintenance, repair, inspection, and upkeep of airport buildings, facilities, grounds, equipment, systems, and infrastructure.

Assists with routine maintenance and repair of building components, fixtures, equipment, and systems. This includes doors, locks, windows, walls, ceilings, flooring, roofing, plumbing, mechanical equipment, and other facility components.

Learns and performs basic carpentry, painting, masonry, drywall, caulking, concrete repair, and other general maintenance tasks as assigned.

Assists higher-level maintenance staff, contractors, or other qualified personnel with plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, locksmith, and building system maintenance within the limits of training, certification, licensing requirements, and applicable codes.

Monitors, follows, and performs routine preventive maintenance tasks on assigned facility systems and equipment; assists with inspections, cleaning, lubrication, filter changes, minor adjustments, and other scheduled maintenance activities.

Learns and follows established preventive maintenance procedures, safety practices, work order processes, airport rules, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Completes records, documentation, and reports in accordance with department procedures and manufacturer recommendations.

Monitors the condition of airport buildings, facilities, equipment, and work areas; identifies and reports maintenance needs, safety concerns, security issues, and non-compliant conditions to the Facility Manager or appropriate airport management personnel.

Assists with the maintenance and operation of airport-specific facility systems and equipment, including passenger boarding bridges, baggage conveyor systems, garage doors, lighting control systems, public address systems, and other facility equipment.

Uses hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, vehicles, and maintenance equipment in a safe and proper manner. Performs routine cleaning, inspection, and minor repair of assigned tools, vehicles, and equipment.

Assists with snow and ice removal in and around terminal facilities, to include the operation of light duty trucks with plows, snow blowers, mechanical brooms, and shovels.

Performs basic grounds maintenance, including mowing, trimming, landscaping, cleanup, and related seasonal tasks.

Assists with inventorying, stocking, and organizing maintenance materials, tools, supplies, parts, and equipment.

Provides basic support to airport custodial staff or other airport divisions as needed to maintain safe, clean, functional, and operationally ready facilities.

Responds to maintenance requests, alarms, security incidents, and facility concerns in accordance with airport procedures and training/qualification limitations.

Interacts professionally with all airport users and provides good customer service at all times.

Maintains regular attendance and availability for assigned shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, emergency call-back, weather events, and other schedules necessary to support the 24 hour a day, 7 day a week operation of the airport.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Knowledge of: basic hand tool, power tool, and small equipment use; general understanding of materials used in building construction; occupational hazards and safety precautions existing in building maintenance, equipment operation, and tool use; basic preventive maintenance principles related to buildings, fixtures, equipment, and facility systems; custodial, housekeeping, and facility upkeep to include record keeping; customer service and its application; airport safety and security requirements.

Skill in: use of hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, vehicles, and maintenance equipment; safe and effective use of hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, vehicles, and maintenance equipment; performing routine and semi-skilled building maintenance, repair, inspection, and facility support tasks; performing basic tasks of carpentry, painting, masonry, drywall, concrete repair, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, mechanical, locksmith, and other facility maintenance work under appropriate direction; identifying visible maintenance issues, safety hazards, equipment problems, and facility deficiencies; following directions, verbal instruction, checklists, procedures, policies, and safety requirements; operating assigned vehicles and equipment after receiving appropriate training; maintaining a clean and safe work environment; documenting and reporting on work performed; communicating clearly and professionally in writing or verbally with supervisors, coworkers, airport staff, tenants, passengers, and the general public.

Ability to: learn airport facilities, buildings, systems, equipment, and operating procedures; understand and follow safety procedures and requirements; learn and apply basic building maintenance methods, procedures, and preventive maintenance processes; perform routine physical labor and semi-skilled maintenance duties in a safe, efficient, and reliable manner; understand and follow verbal and written instructions; read and understand basic work orders, labels, maintenance needs, security concerns, and non-compliant conditions; work independently and with others on routine tasks and assignments after instruction and training; seek guidance or the appropriate means or method to complete work when needed; work cooperatively with others and maintain effective working relationships.

Special Qualifications

Ability to pass a ten-year criminal history records check and obtain and maintain a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge throughout employment.

Possession of a valid Idaho State Driver License is required.

Work Environment

Work is performed in and around airport buildings, terminals, maintenance areas, grounds, parking areas, and other airport facilities. Physical exertion is required including walking, standing, bending, climbing, kneeling, reaching, carrying, pushing, pulling, and lifting. Work may involve the use of hand tools, power tools, ladders, lifts, vehicles, and maintenance equipment. Regular lifting of goods, equipment, and material weighing 50 pounds occurs while weights of up to 100 pounds may be possible.

Employees work indoors and outdoors, inclement weather. Wind, dust, moisture, fumes, noise, and other conditions common to building maintenance and airport operations occur. The position interacts with airport employees, tenants, contractors, passengers, and the public. Employees must follow airport safety and security procedures at all times.

$21.82 - $24.49
