About the Role

Our client, a key entity managing South Africa's air traffic control services, is seeking a qualified and highly alert Air Traffic Controller to join their team at a busy aerodrome in Welkom, Free State. This demanding role requires the ability to manage the safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic within the assigned airspace. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing control services to aircraft on the ground and in the air, ensuring separation minima are maintained at all times. This position is crucial for aviation safety and efficiency and demands unwavering concentration and rapid decision-making. The ideal candidate will thrive in a high-pressure environment and possess exceptional communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

• Control and monitor aircraft movements within the aerodrome traffic circuit and approach/departure sectors, ensuring adherence to separation standards.
• Issue clearances, instructions, and relevant information to pilots via radio communication.
• Manage ground movements of aircraft and vehicles on the apron, taxiways, and runways to prevent collisions.
• Monitor weather conditions and other environmental factors that may affect flight safety and operations.
• Coordinate with other air traffic control units (e.g., Area Control Centre) and relevant airport services (e.g., fire rescue, security).
• Maintain vigilance and situational awareness at all times, responding effectively to emergencies and unusual situations.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant air traffic control procedures, regulations, and directives from the aviation authority.
• Utilize sophisticated radar, communication, and surveillance systems to facilitate air traffic management.
• Operate from a control tower or operations room environment in Welkom.
• Participate in regular simulator training and competency assessments.

Requirements

• Valid Air Traffic Controller License issued by the relevant South African authority (SACAA).
• Successful completion of an accredited Air Traffic Control training course (e.g., Aerodrome Control, Approach Control).
• Demonstrable experience in aerodrome control operations.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with clear and concise articulation.
• Strong decision-making abilities and the capacity to remain calm under pressure.
• High level of concentration, attention to detail, and situational awareness.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment and under strict operational protocols.
• Proficiency in English is essential.
• Must be able to pass stringent medical examinations and security background checks.
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, as required for 24/7 operations in Welkom.
