Job summary

Atrium Health's MedCenter Air transport team provides critical care transport for ill and injured patients, including advanced procedures and airway management. The role supports EMS operations across ambulances, helicopters, and airplanes, with supervision by Medical Control Physician.

Candidates must hold an accredited respiratory care credential, be an RT with required licenses and certifications, and have extensive ED/ICU experience plus paramedic credentials within 2 years.

Qualifications

• Graduate from an accredited school of respiratory care is required.
• Current RT license or temporary license as a registered petitioner; RRT required, BSRT preferred.
• BLS required; trauma, ACLS, PALS, NRP and STABLE certifications required after orientation.
• Three years of clinical respiratory care experience in ED/ICU; proficiency in advanced procedures.
• Paramedic certification within 2 years of hire; NC/SC EMT-P and National Registry must be maintained.
• Advanced certification (ACCS or equivalent) required to maintain position per CAMTS standards.
• Aviation training or flight status required; Night Vision Goggles may be needed; FAA Part 135 rules apply.
• Valid driver's license and insurability for driving MedCenter Air vehicles; smartphone for operations.

Responsibilities

• Care for ill and injured patients transported by Med Center Air.
• Collect data pertinent to patient health and situation.
• Use clinical reasoning to conduct assessments and interventions for optimum care.
• Delegate care to appropriate healthcare workers; ensure safe, effective services.
• Participate in governance and committee activities; adhere to safety and environmental standards.
• Maintain knowledge of multiple transport modes (ambulance, helicopter, airplane).
• Initiate advanced practice procedures to improve patient outcomes; manage airway and ventilation.
• Monitor and transport patients requiring ECMO/other devices as applicable.

Education

Accredited school of respiratory care

Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT)

BSRT preferred

BLS certification

Three years of clinical respiratory care experience (ED/ICU)

Paramedic certification within 2 years of hire

ACCS or equivalent certification

Trauma Certification (ACLS, PALS, NRP, STABLE)

FAA Night Vision Goggles flight status training
