Job summary

American Family Insurance is seeking a Summer 2027 Product Data Engineering Intern in Madison, WI. The program runs 10–14 weeks from mid/late May through August with a mentor engineer and a final presentation of your project.

You will work on our service-oriented data and AI platform, building a real AI agent, integrating it into workflows, and improving shared tools for future agents. Housing bonus may apply based on proximity to an AmFam office.

Qualifications

• Demonstratable hands-on project or internship experience developing AI solutions

Responsibilities

• Develop an understanding of our business, culture and structure to support your work.
• Contribute ideas and strategic approaches in response to changing situations.
• Work with your mentor and a partner team to understand a real business problem and turn it into a working AI solution by breaking it into tasks.
• Build and deploy an AI agent on our platform, give it tools, manage context, retries, timeouts, and outputs.
• Contribute to a shared platform capability, such as evaluation, observability, or internal tooling.
• Follow team standards for code quality, testing, code review, and security; write tests for your code.
• Help measure how well an AI solution works and share findings with the team.
• Take part in stand-ups, planning and code reviews; update mentor on progress and blockers.
• Add logging, metrics, and tracing so others can see agent activity and cost.
• Document what you built and hand off so another engineer can pick it up; present work at midpoint and end
