Job summary

IBM Research is seeking a Design Engineer Intern to design and ship UI for production applications from sketch to merged code. You will extend our component library and Storybook, building patterns that are reusable and discoverable by researchers.

You will prototype in code to deliver clickable experiences quickly, and work with AI coding agents to improve team workflows. Bring IBM Research's voice and aesthetic judgement to the interface while collaborating with product managers, engineers,

Qualifications

Portfolio of design work showing typography, layout, color, motion and interaction states.
Exposure to design systems with component variants and design tokens; documentation basics.
Hands-on use of AI coding tools and repeatable setups; loop engineering and agent swarms.
Some back-end familiarity to shape API data for interfaces (Python/Go/Node.js).

Responsibilities

Design and ship UI for production applications from sketch to code.
Extend the component library and Storybook documentation to keep patterns reusable.
Prototype in code to enable researchers to interact with a clickable demo quickly.
Collaborate with AI coding agents and improve how the team runs them.
Convey IBM Research's voice in the interface with thoughtful typography and visuals.
