Job summary

IBM Research AI Native Systems is seeking an AI-Native Hardware-Software Co-design Research Intern to join a project aligned with your technical background. Projects may include AI-assisted compiler development, kernel generation, RTL generation, hardware verification, or cross-layer optimization.

You will work with a research mentor and an interdisciplinary team, contributing to research prototypes and experiments while applying ML, generative AI, and systems techniques to design challenges.

Qualifications

• Enrollment in a Master’s or PhD program in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field.
• Strong programming or hardware-development skills using Python, C, C++, Verilog or SystemVerilog.
• Experience in at least one area: compilers, kernel development, ML systems, reinforcement learning, computer architecture, RTL, hardware verification or co-design.
• Experience conducting experiments, debugging complex systems, analyzing quantitative results, or developing research prototypes.
• Ability to communicate technical ideas and collaborate effectively in a multidisciplinary research environment.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to research prototypes in one or more project areas aligned with your expertise.
• Apply machine learning, generative AI, automated reasoning, reinforcement learning, or systems techniques to hardware/software challenges.
• Investigate reinforcement learning and post-training methods for extending open models to address complex tasks.
• Design experiments and benchmarks to evaluate correctness, performance, efficiency, or development-cycle improvements.
• Collaborate with researchers and engineers across AI, compilers, architecture, verification, and systems software.
