Job summary

AMD is offering a Summer/Fall co-op and internship program in San Jose, CA for PhD students in computer science or related fields. You will work full-time in a hybrid/onsite setup, developing and optimizing AI software across CPU, GPU, and accelerators.

Expect hands-on work with AI frameworks and kernel development while collaborating with researchers and engineers. The role emphasizes performance profiling, model optimization techniques, and contributions to AI runtimes and tooling.

Qualifications

This candidate is enrolled in a US-based PhD program in a technical field.
Proficient in Python and/or C/C++ with AI framework experience.
Experience or coursework in AI model training, inference, or optimization.

Responsibilities

Develop, benchmark, and optimize AI software for training, fine-tuning, and inference across CPU, GPU, and accelerators.
Profile workloads, identify bottlenecks, and implement performance improvements across compute, memory, and runtime layers.
Design and prototype GPU/CPU kernels using HIP, CUDA, OpenCL, or Triton.
Research quantization, low-precision inference, sparsity, pruning, and distillation techniques.
Contribute to AI frameworks and runtimes such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or ONNX Runtime.
Develop parallel and distributed computing methods and scalable training/inference workflows.
