Job summary

Capital One is seeking an Applied Researcher 4 in McLean, VA to develop AI foundation models and advance state-of-the-art ML methods. You will collaborate with data scientists, software engineers, and product managers to translate research into real customer experiences and production-ready AI solutions.

The role requires a PhD in a relevant field (or MS with 2+ years of applied research) and experience in training large-scale models, optimization techniques, and open-source frameworks.

Qualifications

• PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, AI, Mathematics, or related fields, or MS with 2 years of applied research experience.
• Experience building large deep learning models (language, vision, events, or graphs) and expertise in training optimization, self-supervised learning, robustness, explainability, or RLHF.
• Ability to own a research agenda and autonomously pursue long-running projects.

Responsibilities

• Partner with a cross-functional team to deliver AI-powered products changing customer interaction with money.
• Leverage a broad stack (PyTorch, AWS Ultraclusters, Huggingface, Lightning) to extract insights from large datasets.
• Build AI foundation models from design through training, evaluation, and deployment.
• Engage in applied research to push AI developments into next-gen customer experiences.
• Translate complex work into tangible business goals; communicate with stakeholders.
• Prepare internal tech reports or conference submissions summarizing novel methods.
