Job summary

GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer on the Agent Tools team. You’ll help design and build systems that let AI agents interact with the full software delivery lifecycle, spanning MCP server and future tech.

You’ll work with engineers across AI, backend, and product to create scalable backends, APIs, and robust tests, while shaping architecture at the intersection of platform and AI strategy.

Qualifications

• Experience building production apps with Rails, including background jobs, APIs, and data models.
• Experience with scalable REST/GraphQL APIs and AI tooling is a plus.
• Familiarity with asynchronous teamwork in distributed environments.

Responsibilities

• Develop, ship, and maintain features for Agent Tools backend.
• Collaborate with product, UX, frontend, backend, and AI specialists.
• Design and review GraphQL and REST APIs with clear contracts.
• Improve automated testing and observability, including RSpec.
• Participate in on-call rotations and incident resolution.
• Share standards to uplift AI integration across the team.
