Job summary

Nelnet is seeking a software engineer to contribute to a new AI-enabled workforce onboarding and case support platform (WREN) for public-sector agencies. You’ll work on MVP onboarding and training workflows, decision support, and guided user experiences, then decide between ongoing WREN support or MVP development for a new Nelnet product.

The role supports a hybrid work model with a 24-hour in-office expectation weekly for those near an office, and requires US work authorization without

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent practical experience.
• 5+ years of professional software development experience delivering features independently.
• Experience across full stack and willingness to adapt to unfamiliar tech stacks.

Responsibilities

• Design and develop features as part of a cross-functional scrum team with engineers, product owners, and designers.
• Implement backend services and APIs and frontend UI components to meet product requirements.
• Translate business and technical requirements into working software.
• Write clean, tested code following team standards.
• Participate in code reviews, testing, and iterative feature refinement.
• Help diagnose defects, performance issues, and integration problems.
• Collaborate with product, design, and domain experts to achieve project goals.
• Adapt to evolving requirements within the project timeline.
