Job summary

BWX Technologies, Inc. in Lynchburg, VA seeks a Computer Vision / Machine Learning R&D Engineer to advance image analysis and ML models for manufacturing and space applications.

You will develop physics-informed learning models, integrate them with machine vision, and collaborate with engineering teams to deploy scalable solutions. The role requires a bachelor’s degree and 2+ years of experience, travel 30–40%, US citizenship and ability to obtain security clearance.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, computer science, data science, or a related field is required.
• A minimum of two (2) years of relevant professional experience is required.
• Must have experience in computer vision and machine learning, with a strong focus on deep generative models (e.g., GANs, VAEs, diffusion models).
• Must have experience in signal processing with demonstrated knowledge and application of signal processing techniques.
• Must be a self-starter and comfortable supporting multiple teams, systems and developing products.
• Travel (30-40%) domestic and international is required.
• Must be a US Citizen.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE or DOD security clearance, whichever is required.

Responsibilities

• Develop physics informed and constrained machine learning models that are integrated with machine vision classifiers to identify and classify manufacturing defects and process variation.
• Work on image classifiers, object detectors, video understanding models, multi-modal classifiers, etc.
• Develop and improve sensor systems and hardware based directly on model performance.
• Work with engineering teams to implement model pipelines and deploy the services at scale.
• Collaborate with data analysts to understand and find data patterns.
