Job summary

Smooth Media is seeking an in-house Automation Engineer to streamline operations across the company. You will design, build, and own AI-powered automations and no-code workflows that cut manual work and boost efficiency.

The role partners with team leads to implement scalable solutions while maintaining existing internal tools and processes. Based in NYC, you will work in-office Monday through Thursday, collaborating across Operations, People & Talent, Marketing, Editorial, Events, and Brand

Qualifications

• Experience building automations, workflows, or AI-powered tools.
• Familiar with no-code/low-code platforms (Zapier, Make, n8n) and AI tooling.
• Strong communication and ability to translate pain points into solutions.

Responsibilities

• Identify repetitive, low-human-value work suitable for automation.
• Design, build, and own AI-powered tools, workflows, and integrations.
• Maintain and optimize internal tools Smooth has built.
• Collaborate with team leads to scope, prioritize, and roll out workflows.
• Document and train teams to ensure adoption of new tools.
• Evaluate new AI/automation platforms and advocate for useful ones.
• Track impact: time saved, errors reduced, and work eliminated.

Smooth Media is the talent management company for knowledge creators — the people teaching, explaining, and breaking down the world through smart, insightful content. We serve as a true strategic partner to our creators — an extension of their team that helps them run, grow, and professionalize their business.

Reports to: COO

We're looking for someone to make Smooth run smarter. You'll work across the whole company — Operations, People & Talent, Marketing, Editorial, Events, and Brand Partnerships — to find the repetitive, transactional work slowing teams down, and build the AI-powered solutions that eliminate or streamline it.

We've already built a lot of internal tech, and you'll work on, own, and optimize it, alongside everything new you build from scratch.

This is an individual contributor role for someone who's equal parts curious, technical, and obsessed with making things work better.

What you'll do

• Identify repetitive, low-human-value, transactional work across teams that's ripe for automation
• Design, build, and own AI-powered solutions: tools, agentic workflows, automations, and integrations that eliminate or streamline manual work
• Maintain and continuously optimize the internal tools and systems Smooth has already built
• Partner directly with team leads to scope, prioritize, and roll out new workflows
• Document and train teams on new tools and processes so adoption actually sticks
• Evaluate new AI and automation platforms, and make the case for what's worth adopting
• Track and report on the impact of what you build — time saved, errors reduced, work eliminated

What we're looking for

• Experience building automations, workflows, or AI-powered tools (whether at an actual job or just for fun!)
• Know your way around no-code/low-code automation platforms (Zapier, Make, n8n, or similar) and AI/LLM tooling (Claude, ChatGPT, or agentic AI frameworks)
• A self-starter mentality — you spot the inefficiency before anyone asks you to fix it and are keeping yourself up-to-date on all the new tools coming out
• Strong communication and product skills; you can work with non-technical stakeholders and translate their pain points into a working solution – this is arguably the most important part!
• Must be NYC-based (in office Mon-Thurs)
