Job summary

YMCA of Greater New York is seeking a Group Leader for the Y Afterschool program at Flatbush YMCA in Brooklyn. This part-time role supports school-age children, provides supervision, and leads age-appropriate activities after school and during breaks.

You will collaborate with specialists, offer tutoring, and foster a safe, inclusive environment. The position emphasizes positive role modeling, communication with families, and adherence to health, safety, and program standards.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent required. College credits preferred.
• Minimum of two years of experience working with children under 13 in a group setting.
• Knowledge of ages and stages of youth development.
• Current Pediatrics CPR or First Aid certification preferred.
• General knowledge of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfortable working with diverse youth and adults.
• Y Afterschool programs operate Monday through Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and during public-school breaks.

Responsibilities

• Ensure health, safety, and well-being of participants with proper supervision at all times.
• Collaborate with specialists on implementing engaging, age-appropriate lesson plans.
• Provide academic support, including daily homework assistance and tutoring sessions.
• Create meaningful activities and special events focused on SEL, fitness, STEAM, literacy, and leadership.
• Prepare learning environment, lessons, and supplies for activities.
• Support culminating performances and coordinate with staff as needed.
• Promote inclusive, welcoming environment and maintain accurate program documentation.
• Build positive relationships with parents/guardians and caregivers through regular communication.
• Participate in training, meetings, and special events.
• Adhere to OCFS/DOH/partner standards and regulations.
