Job summary

YMCA of Greater New York invites applications for an Inclusion Specialist in the Vanderbilt YMCA Afterschool program. The role focuses on creating an inclusive, supportive environment for children with diverse abilities, including developing individualized accommodations and behavioral support plans.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Special Education, Social Sciences, Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or related field required.
  • ME, MSW/MHC student or graduate preferred.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with children under 13.
  • Current Pediatrics CPR or First Aid certification preferred.
  • Ability to speak multiple languages preferred.
  • General knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, leadership qualities, and comfortable working with diverse youth and adults.

Responsibilities

  • Actively welcome and develop programming in partnership with the Content Specialist to serve a diverse group of participants, ensuring accessibility for everyone.
  • Develop and implement inclusive outreach strategies to connect with individuals who may face barriers to participation.
  • Foster a safe, welcoming environment and maintain Individualized Accommodation Plans and behavioral support logs.
  • Support systems for tracking student behaviors and collaborate with staff, caregivers, and teachers on behavior support techniques.
  • Partner with the Program Director to integrate social-emotional development and behavior management into programming.
  • Guide staff on implementing behavioral strategies in the learning environment.
  • Communicate with DYCD about needs for specialized supports beyond the program's capacity.
  • Ensure staff are familiar with mental health support needs and trauma-informed programming.
  • Support the creation of a resource center and provide referrals for mental health services as needed.
  • Respond to time-sensitive mental health needs (suicide prevention, grief, loss).
  • Implement lessons to provide additional support for those with special needs and conduct technical assistance with YMCA staff.
  • Adhere to Office of Children and Family Services, Department of Health, NYCHA and funder standards and regulations.
