Job summary

Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN) is a Bay Area nonprofit founded in 1996, focused on helping individuals with special needs and their families. Our After School Program seeks an instructor who enjoys working with this population and can contribute to a supportive, teamwork‑driven environment in Fremont.

The role emphasizes hands-on activities, safety, and daily progress notes, with hours 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM, Monday–Friday.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in education, special needs, or with school-age clients preferred.
  • Must be reliable, a team player, with good communication and be able to work with minimal supervision. English fluency; CPR/First Aid certification required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare snacks and teaching materials for the after-school program.
  • Receive clients from school bus and help them settle in.
  • Provide basic hygiene and self-care support as needed.
  • Engage with clients and implement activities to meet physical, emotional, and social needs.
  • Follow safety rules and ensure client safety.
  • Plan and facilitate activities (cooking, life skills, arts and crafts, science, social skills, music and dance).
  • Maintain a positive learning environment and goals for each client.
  • Supervise client behaviors and keep the facility clean and orderly.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Stand, walk, lift up to 30 pounds as needed, and adapt to changing needs.

Position Title: After School Program Instructor

Location: Fremont, CA

Pay Range: $23 - $25 / hourly (depending on experience)

Employment Type: Part Time

Working Schedule: Mondays - Fridays (3:00 PM - 6:00 PM)

JOB SUMMARY

Friends of Children with Special Needs (FCSN) is a Bay Area non‑profit organization founded in 1996 and focused on helping individuals with special needs and their families find love, hope, respect, and support through integrated community involvement. Our FCSN After School Program is looking to hire an instructor who enjoys working with special needs individuals. Our team focuses a lot on teamwork and positivity! We are looking for someone who understands the individual needs of our clients and has the patience and the passion to work with them.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare snacks and teaching materials for the after school program.
  • Receive clients from their school bus upon their arrival at the program.
  • Provide basic hygiene and self‑care needs for those clients who need them.
  • Work and engage with the clients while they are at the program.
  • Follow all safety rules and ensure the safety of our clients.
  • Plan, facilitate and implement different class activities to meet the physical, emotional and social needs of the clients in the program (i.e. cooking, life skills, arts and craft, science, Social skills, music & dance, etc.).
  • Promote a positive environment for our clients to learn in.
  • Assist in creating obtainable goals and objectives for each client.
  • Supervise and manage client behaviors as necessary.
  • Ensure equipment and the facility are clean, well maintained and safe at all times.
  • Maintain classroom organization and participate in daily clean‑up of the facility.
  • Ensure a positive, safe and healthy environment and complete daily tasks assigned.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings.
  • Able to stand, walk, squat, reach, and move around the work environment to assist clients.
  • Able to lift, carry, push or pull items up to 30 pounds as needed to assist clients.
  • Must be able to adapt to changing client needs and work in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
  • Complete Daily Progress Notes (DPN) for each client in a timely manner
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  1. Education: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Experience: Preferably some experience or studies in education, special needs or with school‑aged clients.
  3. Professional Skills:
    • Must be reliable, a team player, has good communication skills and be able to work with minimal supervision.
    • Must be fluent in English. Bilingual is a plus but not required.
    • Obtain valid CPR and First Aid Certificate
  4. Environmental Conditions and Physical Demands:
    • Able to stand, walk, squat, reach, and move around the work environment to assist clients.
    • Able to lift, carry, push or pull items up to 30 pounds as needed to assist clients.
    • Must be able to adapt to changing client needs and work in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment.
COMPANY-WIDE JOB REQUIREMENTS
  • Must pass CDSS and DOJ fingerprint‑based background clearance prior to employment.
  • Must pass a health screening and TB test prior to employment.
  • Obtain valid CPR and First Aid Certificate within one month of employment (employer‑covered)
  • Use of mask when recommended/required by local Public Health Department.
