Job summary

Ann Arbor YMCA is seeking a Lead School Age Teacher to supervise the after-school program, collaborate with directors to develop activities for children from Young 5s through Fifth Grade, and ensure safety alongside other staff. The role includes guiding staff, checking in/out, and maintaining space and records.

The position requires a Chauffeur’s license or ability to obtain one, CPR/First Aid certification, and a commitment to YMCA core values in a dynamic after-school setting.

Qualifications

• High School Graduate or Equivalent; some college preferred.
• At least one year’s experience working with children; teaching experience preferred.
• Must have Chauffeur’s License or obtain it before first day.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a team.
• CPR and First Aid certification for infant, child and adult or obtain within 30 days.
• Interest and ability in developing creative programming with YMCA core values.
• Patient, high-energy, goal-oriented attitude.
• Ability to be responsive to the needs of both parents and youth enrolled in the After School Program.

Responsibilities

• Provide program supervision using positive guidance techniques.
• Trains new after school staff.
• Oversees check in/check out procedures.
• First line in handling customer service issues.
• Develop and implement program activities that provide youth with experiences in physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development.
• Prepare/serve snacks according to the snack calendar.
• Provide transportation for participants using YMCA buses (chauffeur’s license required).
• Prepare the classroom environment to enable active exploration and interaction in learning centers.
• Maintain program and classroom space and report maintenance needs to the Child Development Directors.
• Ensure classroom ratio follows State of Michigan licensing and Michigan Healthy Out of School Time standards.
• Participate in the support and evaluation of After School Program policies.
• Plan activities developmentally appropriate for youth.
• Communicate, maintain, and model expectations to all youth and staff.
• Provide opportunities for children to develop social skills and conflict resolution.
• Encourage social, academic, and personal growth in youth.
• Assist in maintaining individual records for all participants.
• Attend scheduled staff meetings and in-service trainings.
