Job summary

Ann Arbor YMCA is seeking a Lead School Age Teacher to supervise the after school program and collaborate with Directors on activity planning for youth from Young 5s through Fifth Grade. You will supervise staff, ensure safety, and maintain program spaces.

The role requires at least one year of child-related experience, a valid Chauffeur’s License or ability to obtain one, and CPR/First Aid certification or the ability to obtain within 30 days. M-F afternoons, program-based scheduling.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Child Care Director/Assistant Director and in accordance with the mission and purpose of the Ann Arbor YMCA, the School Age Child Care Lead Teacher is responsible for supervising the day-to-day operations of the 400 W Washington After School program. The SACC Lead will work directly with the Directors to develop programs and activities that cater to children aged Young 5s - Fifth Grade. The SACC Lead will supervise and work alongside other SACC Assistant Teachers to ensure the safety of children in our care, as well as maintaining the After School program and its space.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Provide program supervision using positive guidance techniques.
2. Trains new after school staff
3. Ensures after school staff follow departmental policies and procedures.
4. Oversees the check in/check out procedures.
5. First line in handling customer service issues.
6. Ensures proper conduct of all patrons in the After School Program.
7. Develop and implement program activities that provide youth with experiences in the developmental areas of physical, social, emotional, and intellectual. This includes meeting requirements for any grants that the program receives.
8. Prepare/serve snacks for the afternoon according to the snack calendar created by the Directors.
9. Provide transportation for participants using YMCA buses. Applicants must either already have a Chauffeur’s License or be able to obtain one before the first day of the program.
10. Prepare the classroom environment to enhance each participant play through active exploration and interaction with adults, peers, and materials in learning centers such as dramatic play, blocks, science, math, games/puzzles, books, music, etc.
11. Maintain program and classroom space, including ensuring a clean, sanitary environment, and reporting any equipment/supply needs or maintenance concerns to the Child Development Directors.
12. Ensure classroom ratio is being followed in accordance with State of Michigan licensing and Michigan Healthy Out of School Time standards.
13. Possess working knowledge of child abuse and neglect laws and proper reporting procedures.
14. Participate in the support and evaluation of After School Program policies.
15. Plan activities that are developmentally appropriate for youth participants.
16. Communicate, maintain, and model expectations to all youth and staff.
17. Provide opportunities for children to develop social skills such as cooperating, helping, negotiating, and verbally communicating to solve interpersonal conflicts.
18. Encourage social, academic, and personal growth in youth.
19. Assist in maintaining individual records for all participants in a current and up to date status.
20. Become familiar with children and their families in order to provide quality service.
21. Attending and assisting in facilitation of scheduled staff meetings and in-service training as required.
22. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Child Care Director/Assistant Director

Requirements

• High School Graduate or Equivalent. Some college preferred.
• At least one year’s experience working with children, such as day care or babysitting required. Teaching experience preferred.
• Must have Chauffeur’s License or obtain it before the first day of the after-school program.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, flexibility, and an ability to work in a team setting are required.
• Must have certification in infant, child and adult CPR and First Aid or obtain in the first 30 days.
• An interest and ability in developing and implementing creative programming with the goal of teaching YMCA core values is necessary.
• A patient, high-energy, and goal-oriented attitude is essential.
• Ability to be responsive to the needs, wants, and interests of both the parents and youth enrolled in the Child Watch Program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

1. Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
2. Must be able to assist an average size child up to 50 pounds.
3. Must be able to lift and carry food and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds.
4. Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
5. Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
6. Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
7. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.

WORKING HOURS:

M-F 2:30 pm – 6:00 pm
