Job summary

YMCA of the Triangle in Apex, NC seeks a Youth Counselor Apprentice to lead, mentor, and build positive relationships with youth participants after school. You will plan developmentally appropriate activities and foster a fun, safe environment at Oakview, South Lakes and West Lake sites.

This role requires 18+, a High School Diploma or GED, enrollment in Wake Tech’s Apprenticeship program, and availability 3:30 p.m.–6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

**POSITION SUMMARY:**In partnership with Wake Tech Community College Early Childhood Apprenticeship program, and under the supervision of the Program Director, the Youth Counselor Apprentice is responsible for leading, developing, and building relationships with the youth participants in assigned program.They are responsible for managing these functions in accordance with the stated mission, goals, and policies established by the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.Job Schedule: Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Program sites include Oakview, South Lakes and West Lake Elementary schools.**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:*** Supervises and builds relationships with a group of elementary and/or middle school students.* Implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values.* Creates an atmosphere that is fun, safe, friendly and challenging.* Mentors and models responsible behavior while leading children in the program.* Models and facilitates relationship-building skills in all interactions and maintains positive relationships with campers, parents, school staff and other YMCA staff.* Adheres to YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergency management.* Ensures that space and equipment used for the program is taken care of and left in good, clean condition daily.* Attends staff meetings and trainings.* Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.**QUALIFICATIONS:*** At least 18 years of age.* High School/GED required with previous experience working with children.* Must be currently enrolled in Wake Tech’s Apprenticeship program and selected to participate by college administration guidelines.* Specific certifications and/or training may be required.* Experience preferred in one or more of the following areas: outdoor education, planning and organizing activities, crafts, songs/music, skits, sports, recreational games, etc.* Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.* Multi-lingual desired but not required.**WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:**The work environment and physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.* Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.* Primarily office and program settings with frequent interaction in gyms, classrooms, and outdoor spaces.* Moderate noise levels; may be louder during youth or community activities.* Regular use of computer, phone, and other office technology.* Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting or moving up to 40 lbs.* Some work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.* Flexible schedule required — may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional travel between branches or sites.* Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification.* Must reside in the YMCA of the Triangle service area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and surrounding areas).* Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential job functions.
