Description
POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the supervision of the Youth Program Director, the Head Counselor is responsible for leading the management and development of assigned staff and campers.

They will support, develop, and coach all assigned staff under their direction, as well as give leadership to camp programs as a whole. They have the responsibility for all aspects of the assigned programs when the Director or other program leadership is unavailable.

They are responsible for managing these functions in accordance with the stated mission, goals, and policies established by the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.

Job Schedule (Days): Monday - Friday

Job Schedule (Time): 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. (35-40 hour work week)

Additional Information: The position is a seasonal position designed for candidates who can work during WCPSS' Track 4 Break Schedule:

- October 7-23
- January 4-22
- March 29-April 16

Preferred candidates should have flexibility to work early morning and/or late afternoon shifts. We will also have opportunities for the candidate to serve in other capacities within other departments.

In addition to this hourly rate, you will receive an additional $2/hour when working in the Before School program .

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Provide leadership to the program and daily support and coaching to all assigned staff.
  • Hold assigned staff accountable to performance standards, including safety.
  • Maintain awareness of issues with staff, campers, and parents in their charge.
  • Provide regular informal coaching to staff in line with Director’s feedback and support.
  • Lead afternoon assemblies when appropriate.
  • Assist counselors with major discipline issues.
  • Keep programmed areas clean, neat and supplied at all times.
  • Maintain open communication with parents and school faculty.
  • Help to open or close programs daily.
  • Have complete knowledge of emergency procedures to ensure safety of children.
  • Attend and promote all staff meetings and Family Nights.
  • Help program daily activities that engage children physically, mentally, and emotionally.
  • If applicable, assist in tracking and improving the academic progress of Y-Learning children
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be at least 16 years of age
  • High school diploma or GED required with 1 year of experience working with youth preferred.
  • Previous experience in personal development, outreach initiatives, and supervision of staff and participants.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Strong programming, communication, public speaking, and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to assist in the management of the facility, equipment, and staff.
  • Must obtain certifications through the YMCA in Basic Life Support/First Aid and Emergency Oxygen within first 60 days of hire.
  • Multi-lingual desired but not required.
