Job summary

Chess Wizards in Silver Spring, MD is seeking enthusiastic instructors to lead after-school chess classes for elementary students. You will use our curriculum to teach fundamentals, promote good sportsmanship, and create a positive, engaging classroom.

This role offers flexible hours (1–5 classes per week) with sessions after school between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, travel mileage reimbursement, and competitive pay of $50–$65 per class.

Qualifications

• Experience working with groups of children (teaching, tutoring, coaching, camp counseling, or similar).
• Comfort leading a class independently and creating interactive, friendly sessions.
• Professional, positive, and kid-friendly demeanor.
• Genuine desire to be a positive role model and promote good sportsmanship.
• Strong grasp of chess fundamentals and ability to explain moves, basic strategy, and simple tactics.
• Ability to connect chess problem-solving to real-life problems.
• Reliable transportation and ability to drive between locations.
• Weekday afternoon availability (2:00 PM–5:00 PM) to teach 1–5 classes per week.
• Commitment to safety protocols and adherence to school policies.
• Strong punctuality and time-management skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead fun, interactive chess classes for 10–15 energetic elementary students.
• Use our structured curriculum to teach chess fundamentals and promote good sportsmanship.
• Manage a lively classroom with confidence and positivity.
• Encourage problem-solving, creativity, and critical thinking.
• Follow school safety protocols, including supervision during arrival, dismissal, and in-class activities.
• Travel to various local school sites for each session and arrive prepared.
