Job description

Brief Description of Duties

The Department of African American Studies (AFAM) at San Jose State University invites highly qualified and motivated applicants for part‑time teaching appointments in the department. Candidates should be capable of delivering inclusive course materials, utilizing Canvas Learning Management System (LMS), and meeting scheduled sessions in the mode assigned (asynchronous, synchronous, bichronous, in‑person, or hybrid). The position requires a willingness to begin teaching on short notice and will be assigned based on student enrollment and funding.

Required Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree in the relevant field or a related discipline for lower‑division courses.
  • A Ph.D. in the relevant field or a related discipline for upper‑division courses.
  • Preference for candidates with prior college or university teaching experience and evidence of teaching excellence.
  • Experience teaching undergraduates from diverse ages, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
Compensation

Compensation and salary range placement are determined by qualifications and experience. Anticipated starting salary:

L‑A / Range 2 – $5,507 – $5,959
L‑B / Range 3 – $6,221 – $7,481
L‑C / Range 4 – $6,825 – $9,431
L‑D / Range 5 – $8,593 – $10,347

This is a continuing open position.

Employment Conditions

Faculty employees must complete CSU employee training as assigned, including prevention of discrimination and harassment, gender equity and Title IX, and health and safety. The faculty member will be subject to ongoing review for designation as a Campus Security Authority, with required reporting of Clery incidents and completion of Clery Act training. Compliance with safety measures to reduce COVID‑19 transmission may also be required.

Conditional Offer

The position is located in California and requires commuting to campus. Employment is contingent upon U.S. residence and proof of eligibility to work in the United States. Offers are conditional and may be rescinded if a background check reveals disqualifying information, or if it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information.
