Job summary

Inversion's Advanced Reentry Technologies unit invites a Mechanical Engineer Intern for Summer 2027 in Vista, CA. You will support design, analysis, and testing of mission-critical hardware for the Arc reentry vehicle, collaborating with a hands-on Mechanical team under the Director of Mechanical.

This internship covers CAD modeling, drawings, BOMs, and execution of hardware test campaigns from concept to testable hardware, with opportunities to contribute across the engineering lifecycle.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a Bachelor's or master's in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
• Hands-on engineering experience through coursework, projects, internships, or personal projects.
• Experience with 3D CAD software: NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, Creo or similar.
• Understanding of statics, mechanics of materials, heat transfer, and material properties.
• Ability to take initiative and work through ambiguous technical problems.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality engineering work.
• Clear written and verbal communication in a fast-moving, collaborative team.

Responsibilities

• Support the design and development of mechanical systems including brackets, enclosures, mechanisms, tooling, and test equipment
• Create and revise 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and bills of materials
• Perform engineering analysis using first-principles calculations, hand analysis, and FEA
• Support hardware test campaigns: functional, vibration, shock, thermal, and environmental testing
• Collaborate with manufacturing, technicians, and integration teams to build, inspect, troubleshoot, and iterate hardware
• Maintain engineering documentation: assembly procedures, test plans, reports, interface documents, and design specs
• Take ownership of well-scoped projects and communicate progress, risks, and findings clearly
